SideFX invites users to the Houdini 18 launch event: next Wednesday, 6 November, there will be more information about the new version of the DCC tool. As usual, the associated event takes place in Montreal and attendance is free.

Features in Houdini 18

At this year’s SIGGRAPH 2019, “LOPS“, a new context for Houdini based on “Solaris“, was announced. Solaris is the new USD environment for lighting, look-dev, layout and rendering that SideFX is releasing with Houdini 18. New Houdini features are also expected in Vellum, Fludis, Pyro, destruction, modelling and more. According to the developers, the beta of the new renderer “Karma” is also expected to start at the same time. It is SideFX’s new CPU-based render engine with Hydra support and will also replace Mantra in future.

No Windows 7 Support

The team recently stated in the official forum that it would discontinue Windows 7 support for Houdini 18 and future versions because an evaluation of surveys at the Tech Summit (SIGGRAPH) indicated that there was no longer any demand. Microsoft’s own extended Windows 7 support also ends in January 2020.
