Otoy, known for the GPU renderer Octane, has released the first alpha release of Sculptron . The new tool is intended to enable animated sculpting with GPU acceleration. According to Otoy, however, the tool is not intended to be a direct competitor to ZBrush or Mudbox, but to focus on sculpting for 3D animation. Apparently the whole thing is called “sculpt-animating“.
Sculptron Features
The sculpt-animation tool can currently import OBJs (files and sequences), which can then be deformed using various brushes and settings. You can keyframe every step. The resulting animations are supposed to play back in real time. Alongside this core function, Sculptron also contains the following features:
- Animation Editor for creating multiple layers for more complex animations.
- Procedural textures and noise for use in brushes.
- Animation Cache Sculpting (MDD format and soon Alembic as well) for making adjustments to existing animations, such as fixing cloth dynamics or similar issues.
- Mesh to Volume feature that converts any mesh or animation into an OpenVDB volume for editing.
Download
Sculptron 1.0 can currently be downloaded here for free from the forum. It is an alpha, so you should use the tool only with caution because it is not yet suitable for production.
