The fifth Highlights of FMX 1994-2020 programme focused on virtual reality for social impact with immersive journalist and NowHere Media co-founder Gayatri Parameswaran.

Kusunda

Kusunda used VR storytelling to address the disappearance of an Indigenous language. The discussion examined how immersive media could connect language preservation with first-person narrative design.

Home After War

Home After War placed viewers in Fallujah after the city’s occupation by Islamic State, using interactive VR to explore the continuing danger of improvised explosive devices. The session also considered journalism’s role in virtual reality.

Documentary teams should test participant safety, informed consent, headset accessibility and editorial context before adapting immersive reporting methods.
