Chaos released V-Ray 5 for 3ds Max with LightMix, a rebuilt frame buffer, material management and texture-randomisation tools.

LightMix and compositing

LightMix allowed artists to change light intensity and colour after rendering inside VFB2. A layer compositor added post-processing directly in the frame buffer.

Materials and sampling

The asset browser contained more than 500 previewed materials. Stochastic tiling in VRayUVWRandomizer reduced visible repetition, while VRayMultiSubTex added variation across duplicated assets. The release also introduced an updated Sun and Sky model, Light Path Expressions, blue-noise sampling and ACEScg support.

Teams should test colour management, render parity and VFB output before moving active scenes to the release.
