Painting across UDIM tiles

Adobe added seamless multichannel painting across UDIM boundaries to Substance Painter 2020.2. Artists could paint across tiles inside one Texture Set, while support for naming conventions used by Mudbox and ZBrush was planned for later updates.

Tile display, masks and baking

UV tiles could be imported as image sequences and displayed as a grid in the 2D viewport. Resolution could be set per tile. A UV-tile mask acted as a secondary layer mask, allowing selected tiles to be excluded from computation. Baking also gained tile selection and filename-based UV numbering.

Performance and storage

Texture export was claimed to run up to five times faster. Project opening and incremental saves were improved, while ambient-occlusion and curvature bakers stored greyscale rather than RGB maps. Adobe claimed project-size reductions of up to 60 percent.

The release supported Windows, CentOS, Ubuntu and macOS. Historical pricing ranged from individual subscriptions to a Steam perpetual licence. Teams should test tile naming, baker output and save compatibility before upgrading production projects.
