Battlefield 4 Fan Art Recreates an Abandoned Site in Unreal Engine 4

Environment artist Gilles Devos described building a Battlefield-inspired abandoned construction site in Unreal Engine 4.

Archive translation. This project report was published in October 2021 and covers a fan-art workflow created with Unreal Engine 4. Software versions and portfolio links reflect that period.

From the archive: Environment artist Gilles Devos described how Battlefield 3, released in 2011, helped inspire him to pursue a career as a game artist.

For his fan project, Devos created an abandoned construction-site environment in Unreal Engine 4. The visual direction drew on “Fishing in Baku,” the gameplay-reveal sequence for Battlefield 4.

The project focused on environment art: assembling the construction setting, establishing the abandoned atmosphere and using real-time lighting and materials to evoke the visual language of the Battlefield series.

Devos studied Digital Arts & Entertainment in Belgium and shared the completed work through his portfolio. Before reproducing the workflow today, verify the relevant Unreal Engine version, asset licences and rendering settings.
