Angie Hybrid Rendering in Clarisse 5.5

Isotropix’s Angie combines CPU and GPU rendering in Clarisse 5.5 Early Access with OSL, MaterialX and NVIDIA OptiX.

In brief: Isotropix introduced the Angie renderer alongside Clarisse 5.5 Early Access. Angie was a hybrid CPU and GPU renderer for Clarisse users.

Rendering architecture: Angie could render on the CPU, GPU or both simultaneously. It supported Open Shading Language, MaterialX and NVIDIA OptiX hardware-accelerated ray tracing, while continuing to work beside Clarisse’s established renderer.

Clarisse context: The 3D content-creation application, first released in 2012, had been used on productions including Blade Runner 2049, First Man, Tenet and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Performance claims: A GPU preview mode was described as up to 20 times faster. Isotropix CEO Sam Assadian said Angie could render about twice as fast on CPU as the classic Clarisse renderer, while a high-end laptop GPU could reach six times the performance of its CPU, yielding up to twelve times the classic renderer’s speed. These were vendor claims.
