For those who don’t know the tool: Mihail Lupu is a character- and creature-artist and developer behind several Autodesk 3ds Max modelling utilities, including sculpting, spline and hair-card tools; retoPoly extends that ecosystem into artist-directed topology creation on high-resolution surfaces, keeping the resulting mesh editable in Max’s modifier stack before downstream deformation, rigging and asset preparation.
Quads without leaving the stack
retoPoly is a retopology modifier for Autodesk 3ds Max 2023 through 2027. Its focus is not another automatic quadrangulation pass. Instead, it is an artist-controlled toolset for creating and editing topology directly over high-resolution geometry using projected drawing, flow controls, brushes, guides, bridging, patching, masking and live conforming. That matters in a host which already has Autodesk Retopology Tools. Autodesk’s Retopology modifier includes automatic approaches such as ReForm, QuadriFlow and Instant Mesh, while Flow Retopology provides Autodesk’s remote cloud-compute workflow. retoPoly addresses a different part of the problem: placing topology where the artist wants it and retaining direct control over edge flow.

A fairly crowded toolbox
The tool divides the work across a sizeable set of topology operations. Construction tools listed by the developer include Contour, Bridge, Fill Hole, Stripe, Patch and Draw. Brush-oriented controls include Transform, Relax and Conform, while flow and edge editing include Flow, Edit Flow, Straighten, Edge Length, Cut, Fast Loop and Guide Flow. Mask and Frozen Faces controls are also listed.
The developer additionally specifies Auto Weld, Show Cage and live conforming. Together with projected drawing, these features point toward a workflow in which new topology remains attached to the high-resolution reference while the artist adjusts structure and edge placement.

For character work, the practical attraction is straightforward. Automatic retopology can be useful for generating a starting mesh or reducing complexity, but deformation topology often needs deliberate loops and local decisions around joints, facial features and other areas where mesh structure is part of the rigging strategy. retoPoly is aimed at that hands-on stage rather than at making those decisions disappear behind a button.

The modifier is the workflow
The more consequential implementation detail is that retoPoly operates as a 3ds Max modifier. The topology remains editable in the modifier stack and can be followed by modifiers including Symmetry and TurboSmooth without first collapsing the retopology result. That keeps topology construction inside Max’s normal stack-based iteration model. An artist can therefore continue working with later modifiers while retaining access to the retopology stage instead of committing immediately to a collapsed mesh.
This is not the same as claiming that every modifier, deformation setup or production stack will behave interchangeably. Studios with established modelling stacks should therefore treat broader combinations as something to validate rather than assume. For asset teams that already keep sculpt cleanup, modelling and deformation preparation inside 3ds Max, the benefit is less about interchange and more about avoiding an additional retopology application for work that needs close artist supervision.

Online licence, local assumptions avoided
Licensing deserves particular attention because the product page describes retoPoly as using a cloud licence and requiring an active internet connection for the software to function. The licence can be moved to another computer by deactivating it on the current machine and activating it on the replacement. The seller states that the licence is valid only on the computer currently activated. That is relevant for artists switching workstations and for studios considering deployment across multiple seats.

Three licences, three audiences
The current ArtStation listing presents three purchasing options. Personal Use is USD $32.00 and is described as non-commercial use under ArtStation’s Standard License, for one installation by a single user. The Pro option is USD $65.00, commercial use by a single individual, such as a freelancer, and explicitly distinguishes it from use within a company, studio or other organisation. The Studio / Company option is USD $120.00 and uses ArtStation’s Extended Commercial License. The seller positions that variant for commercial use within a company or studio.
For pipeline managers, the distinction between the Pro and Studio variants matters more than the price difference alone. A freelancer doing commercial work and an artist operating under a studio organisation are not the same.
