Rolf Grimmer and Christian Hübner announced the first LightWave 3D Tutorial Contest for 2002. The competition aimed to improve users’ understanding of LightWave 7 and its companion software by collecting practical knowledge from experienced artists.
The organisers argued that LightWave’s extensive possibilities emerged not only from manuals but also through applied creativity. Sharing expertise was presented as more useful than keeping techniques private, and the contest formed part of rendering.de’s effort to preserve community knowledge.
The assignment
Entrants had to create a tutorial on a defined subject using LightWave 6.5 or later. It needed to provide practical assistance to other users. The overall length was unrestricted, provided that the participation requirements were met and the entry arrived before the deadline.
The competition was planned to run for three months. Its starting date was to be announced online, with entries closing 90 days later.
Prizes and participation
Prizes worth more than €7,500—approximately DM 14,700 at the time—were offered. Individuals, companies, organisations and institutions could participate, provided they wanted to share their experience with the LightWave community.
Judging
A jury drawn from companies, institutions and media associated with LightWave would rank the entries for quality, clarity and reproducibility. Current product information is available from LightWave 3D. The contest belongs to the archive’s LightWave and CG-tutorial coverage.
