2008 Sundance Film Festival Showcases a Wide Range of Work by Avid Customers

Independent filmmakers rely on Avid.

Once again this year, the American Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah (17–27 January) was a gathering place for Avid customers. As usual, Avid was represented with numerous talks on the New Frontier stage on Main Street and presented special guests including director and producer Doug Liman (The Bourne Ultimatum, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Swingers) and editor Kevin Tent (Sideways). Many of the filmmakers attending the festival also completed their projects using Avid technology.

Olivier Wicki, editor of “U2 3D”: “We worked with live-action 3D content from 3ality Digital to create this film. One of the biggest challenges in editing was developing everything as coherently as possible, because we not only shot footage during seven live shows, but also used up to nine different cameras at each show. I was genuinely very pleasantly surprised by how quickly the Avid system worked through the timeline and how quickly we could work with this volume of data.”

Dan Carey, producer of “Pretty Bird”: “We were under enormous time pressure. It was therefore clear to us that we needed a reliable system. Our mobile Media Composer allowed us to complete our edit efficiently and very cost-effectively. I have worked with Avid systems for a long time and am impressed by the development I have seen across the product line. Independent film production often means having to work with very limited resources—and the options Avid provides for this are fantastic.”

The submissions to the 2008 Sundance Film Festival once again covered a colourful spectrum of film categories, including documentaries, short films and feature-length dramas. Many of the festival productions completed on Avid systems (a selection follows in alphabetical order) are also likely to reach German cinemas soon:
