Nvidia introduced the APX 2500 at Mobile World Congress 2008 in Barcelona. The application processor is designed to support 3D user interfaces, HD video, HD recording and high-resolution photography on Windows Mobile phones. Nvidia claimed ten hours of 720p HD playback.
“The second PC revolution is beginning,” said Nvidia president and CEO Jen-Hsun Huang. He described mobile devices as converging platforms for film playback, video calls, web browsing and 3D games.
Nvidia worked with Microsoft to align the processor with a new version of Windows Mobile and its multimedia functions. Nvidia listed the following features:
720p HD playback and recording on handheld devices
An ultra-low-power GeForce processor supporting OpenGL ES 2.0 and Microsoft Direct3D for 3D user interfaces
Nvidia nPower technology rated for ten hours of HD video playback and 100 hours of audio playback
Connectivity and media functions for web browsing, social networking, GPS and mapping applications
The APX 2500 was available to selected customers, with production scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2008.
