IBC 2008: CLIPSTER Adds RED Support and High-Speed Conforming

At IBC 2008, DVS presents its flagship CLIPSTER with new speed, efficiency and security features for DCI mastering and conforming, including support for decoding and processing RED camera RAW material.

At the Amsterdam show, DVS is demonstrating how CLIPSTER can optimise workflows. The DI workstation now provides high-speed SDI output, while JPEG2000 compression in the DCI process runs at nearly twice real-time speed. RED camera material can now be read and edited with CLIPSTER, and additional conforming features deliver substantial time savings.

With the release of the RED SDK, CLIPSTER supports decoding REDCODE RAW material directly in the timeline. R3D files can be combined with other file and video formats, enabling a flexible data-processing workflow. Full integration of RED metadata accelerates conforming.

For DCI mastering, CLIPSTER automates every step from the Digital Source Master to the Digital Cinema Package. JPEG2000 compression plays a key role and now runs at nearly twice real time. If digital film data is already available as file sequences on a SAN or other fast storage, users can create a complete 120-minute long-form DCP in a little over an hour, with CLIPSTER generating the finished package directly from the source master in a single step.

CLIPSTER uses an open file system while also supporting database-centred work. Its new conforming tool is database-driven and can automatically search all storage for high-resolution material, including systems connected to a Spycer network. A high-speed copy process can select A/V material from an EDL, copy it to the DI workstation, auto-conform it and prepare it for editing. Split screens allow offline and online edits to be compared frame-accurately over HD-SDI output.

High-speed SDI interfaces also let CLIPSTER users play out and record 1080p material over a single-link signal, eliminating an additional cable. DVS says the new features reinforce CLIPSTER’s long-term viability and its investment in high-quality future standards.
