According to the Macromedia University of Media and Communication (MHMK), it is opening the 2009/10 winter semester with a new Berlin campus and more than 1,500 students. In the capital, Germany’s largest private media university begins its fourth year with the country’s first bachelor’s degree program in “Music Management,” as well as “Sports and Event Management” and “PR and Communication Management.”
“Since MHMK was founded in autumn 2006, we have recorded dynamic growth at all levels,” MHMK President Herbert Schmid-Eickhoff sums up. “New fields of work, such as those arising in the music industry through digital forms of distribution and new internet business models, require appropriate specialization. As a private university, we can respond flexibly to such developments.”
New: Brand Communication/Advertising Degree Program and Master School in Munich
In addition to the new “Music Management” field of study, which is beginning not only in Berlin but also in Munich, Stuttgart and Hamburg, MHMK says it will also offer the new “Brand Communication and Advertising” field of study (Munich, Stuttgart, Cologne, Hamburg) from the winter semester. The undergraduate program concludes after six semesters with a Bachelor of Arts in Media Management.
A Master School has been established at the Munich location for executives and aspiring managers in the media and design industry, starting with two degree programs consistently tailored to the needs of business. The master’s degree program in “Media and Communication Management” focuses on crossmedia, responsibility and entrepreneurship, while the Master of Arts in “Design and Media” can be earned with specializations in design management, media design, service design and strategic design.
To accommodate the university’s expansion and the increased number of students, 13 new professorships were established for the winter semester. In Munich, three additional professorships (Sports and Event Management, Music Management and Journalism) strengthen the campus, two in Stuttgart (Sports and Event Management, Journalism), and five in Cologne (Sports and Event Management, Journalism).
A further professorship in Journalism was created in Hamburg; in Berlin and Munich, an additional female professor is being added to the Media Management program, and in Berlin a professorship in Digital Media Production. This means that for the first time, 50 professors will teach at MHMK nationwide in the 2009/10 winter semester
First Bachelor’s Graduates in November
More than 230 graduates of the Media Management, Digital Media Production and Film/Television degree programs have successfully completed their studies after six semesters. Even before the official conferral of the academic degree in November, the majority of them have already signed an employment contract. “The number of our 500 first-semester students alone shows that education as a forward-looking asset is becoming increasingly important,” summarizes Prof. Jürgen Faust, Dean of MHMK’s Faculty of Media.
“Despite, or perhaps precisely because of, times of crisis, we are seeing increased demand for highly trained young professionals.” To provide alumni with a platform on their path into professional life through which they can remain in contact with their former fellow students, the nationwide alumni association MHMK Connect e.V. was founded at the end of June, with a board formed by several graduates.
The association’s tasks include exchanging experience and providing mutual support during the first steps into professional life or a subsequent master’s degree, as well as organizing regular networking and alumni meetings or profession-specific continuing education opportunities.
