Simply gigantic—this describes not only the scenes in Roland Emmerich’s 2012, but also the audience figures, Sony Pictures is pleased to report. With its German launch on November 12, 2012 went straight to number one with 1.1 million visitors, giving Sony Pictures its best opening result of the year.

The star director’s latest work makes cinemas shake—and audiences marvel. The spectacular images of the end of the world break every visual boundary and provide breathtaking entertainment for a full 158 minutes.

Worldwide, 2012 had already grossed US$225 million after its first weekend, more than US$12 million of it in Germany alone. For Sony Pictures, this represents the best box-office result ever for a non-sequel.

Alongside John Cusack (“1408”, “Identity”), Amanda Peet (“Syriana”, “Something’s Gotta Give”), Oliver Platt (“Year One”, “Bicentennial Man”), Thandie Newton (“Crash”), Danny Glover (“Be Kind Rewind”), Chiwetel Ejiofor (“Children of Men”) and Woody Harrelson (“Seven Pounds”, “No Country for Old Men”) fight for humanity’s survival. Film composer Harald Kloser is responsible for the music and also wrote and produced the screenplay together with Roland Emmerich. The impressive images come from cinematographer Dean Semler (“Apocalypto”).
