The HXR-NX5 handheld camcorder and HXR-FMU128 flash memory unit. The HXR-NX5 camcorder opens up a file-based workflow based on the AVCHD codec for professional filmmakers and semi-professional users. The hybrid-capable entry-level model records to Memory Stick Pro Duo memory cards, SD/SDHC media or an optional flash module with 128 GB storage capacity. This makes the HXR-NX5 particularly suitable for small production companies, as well as users wishing to move from HDV to professional Full HD production.
The HXR-NX5 camcorder stores recordings either on Memory Stick Pro Duo or SD/SDHC memory cards, for which two slots are available. Alternatively, users can use the optional HXR-FMU128 flash memory unit. Memory Stick Pro Duo cards have capacities of up to 32 GB. This corresponds to just under three hours of recording at a maximum data rate of 24 Mbps. The same applies to common SD/SDHC media. Sony nevertheless recommends HX-series Memory Stick Pro Duo cards because they offer a significant speed advantage when importing data. Thanks to the integrated hot-swap function with automatic switching from A to B, users can replace memory cards during recording. The HXR-FMU128 flash memory unit has a capacity of 128 GB, enabling a maximum recording time of up to eleven hours at 24 Mbps. It simply attaches to the camcorder. A PC can read the data via USB connection.
The HXR-NX5 demonstrates flexibility not only in its choice of storage medium. Users can also choose between several recording formats: in addition to various HD formats using the AVCHD codec, such as 1920x1080i50, 1920x1080p25, 1280x720p50 or 1440x1080i50, the camcorder also records SD using the MPEG-2 codec. Users also have access to various connections, including HDMI and HD/SD-SDI outputs, for simultaneous connection to an external recorder and a professional broadcast monitor. The HXR-NX5 is also flexible in audio: recording in AC3 format or uncompressed linear PCM mode meets high quality standards. Users can also record sound with either the internal stereo microphone or the two external XLR connections.
The HXR-NX5 is additionally equipped with proven technologies. The camcorder’s “G Lens,” with independent rings for focus, zoom and aperture, has a 20x optical zoom for sharp images in clear colours, with a focal length of 29.5 mm to 590 mm in 35 mm equivalent. The new camcorder also uses three 1/3-inch Exmor CMOS sensors with ClearVid Array technology, which achieve high sensitivity even in unfavourable lighting conditions and produce rich, noise-free images. The HXR-NX5’s minimum illumination is 1.5 lx.
Sony Professional’s new AVCHD camcorder offers users a high level of convenience: the HXR-NX5’s high-resolution 3.2-inch LCD display also functions as a touch panel for direct and rapid access to various camera menus. Through the integrated GPS function, the camcorder additionally records all requested geographical metadata during filming. Sony Professional also guarantees two years of PrimeSupport, including collection and delivery throughout the EU, Norway and Switzerland.

Users can also continue using existing components such as memory cards, batteries and tripods with the HXR-NX5.”
Sony’s recommended net retail price for the HXR-NX5 camcorder is EUR 4,490.64, while the HXR-FMU128 flash memory unit is EUR 829.00 net. The devices are available now.
