By investing in 18 Sony PVM-L2300 monitors, Bayerischer Rundfunk is taking another step towards HD. According to Sony Germany, the broadcaster will use the new 23-inch Full HD LCD monitors in future for 2D, 3D and text graphics.
Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR) is increasingly focusing on high definition and is gradually converting its production to the new format. At the beginning of 2010, BR will supply 20 percent of its broadcast material to ARD in HD. After the broadcaster had already chosen Sony’s XDCAM HD422 format for HD production in 2009, HD technology is now also entering BR’s design departments with the new Sony monitors.
“HD is coming faster and faster - the sooner we prepare for it, the better,” explains Michael Engl, project engineer in BR’s radio and television technology planning department. “Where SD still stands today, we will gradually switch to HD.”
BR had only recently upgraded its character generator from SD to HD and uses the high-end “Flame” graphics generator - for this and other applications, the broadcaster needed sharp HD images with high light output and strong contrast. Ahead of the investment decision, the Institute for Broadcasting Technology (IRT), the central research institute of Germany’s public-service broadcasters, surveyed the market in a major monitor study and tested a large number of monitors from different manufacturers. The IRT then recommended the Sony PVM-L2300, particularly for BR’s design area.
“The new Sony monitors display both SD and HD in the best quality,” says Michael Engl. “Another important argument for every investment decision is, of course, continuity in a provider’s quality, including in terms of service and spare parts. We have worked successfully with Sony for a long time and feel we are in good hands there.”
Sony developed the PVM-L-series TRIMASTER monitors as a complement to the award-winning BVM-L-series reference monitors for demanding applications in broadcasting, production, postproduction and professional environments. The PVM-L2300 has many features of the Class 1 BVM-L231 reference model that have proved very helpful in practice, the company further explains. These include Black Frame Insertion mode to reduce motion blur and interlaced mode, which correctly reproduces fields. By using a 10-bit panel and the 12-bit display engine, the PVM-L2300 delivers not only precise colour and image reproduction but also high image consistency.
