SES ASTRA today announced the launch of Europe’s first 3D demo channel via ASTRA. Following initial tests, the channel will launch on May 4, 2010, for the opening of ANGA Cable. The specialist trade fair for cable, broadband and satellite takes place in Cologne from May 4 to 6, 2010. ASTRA’s new 3D demo channel will then be available free-to-air via the ASTRA orbital position at 23.5 degrees East. The offering, with 3D content from sport, music and entertainment, is initially aimed at retailers and installers.

Ferdinand Kayser, President and CEO of SES ASTRA, said: “Now that the first 3D-capable televisions are in stores, the launch of the first European 3D demo channel comes at exactly the right time to advance this exciting technology. ASTRA’s new 3D demo channel not only shows the immense advantages that satellite reception offers for high-quality 3D television, it also demonstrates the leading position that SES ASTRA occupies as a driving force for innovation in transmission technology. By working closely with leading television manufacturers, broadcasters and other partners in the industry, we once again demonstrate that we are a pioneer in new technical developments and can bring together the industry’s most important players to advance innovation.”

Many of SES ASTRA’s most important customers are already working with the new technology and have either conducted initial tests or begun regular 3D transmissions. While British pay-TV operator BSkyB has already broadcast the first football matches in 3D to bars and clubs throughout England, French pay-TV provider Canal+ announced the launch of a 3D channel for December 2010.

The transmission data for the new demo channel is to be announced shortly.
