Sony and the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) announced in March that, in collaboration with the BBC, they would record selected matches of the 2011 Wimbledon tennis tournament in 3D.
Several major international broadcasters and cinema operators have now confirmed that they will broadcast the 3D production of the men’s semifinals and final and the women’s final at Wimbledon 2011, or show it on cinema screens.
At present, six broadcasters from the United Kingdom, the USA, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Sweden have agreed to transmit Sony’s Wimbledon production live in 3D.
In addition, the tennis spectacle will be seen in cinemas in at least 22 countries. More than 170 cinemas in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Norway, Greece, Turkey, Portugal, Belgium, Germany, Austria, the USA, Canada, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Uruguay have confirmed that they will show the tennis classic live in 3D.
Negotiations are currently still under way with further broadcasters and cinema operators in various countries and regions. It can be assumed that the number of countries and cinemas in which the event will be transmitted live in 3D on television or in cinemas will increase further.
