Redray is RED’s first 4K video player and is intended to be suitable for 4K content in home cinemas, industry or cinemas. The player is said to be able to play 4K films with a resolution of up to 4,096 x 2,160, in both 2D and 3D.
The player’s playback frame rate ranges from 24 to 60 fps; according to RED, data is primarily intended to be transferred to the device via the internet. The data rate for 4K videos is said to be only 2.5 MBytes per second.
A 1 TByte hard drive serves as the storage medium in the player’s 316 x 61 x 260 mm aluminium housing. Up to 100 hours of 4K video material is said to be storable on it. Thanks to an advanced network and a low data rate, according to RED, content can be transferred via FTP transfer or the solid-state storage medium itself, just as easily as with HD films, but at four times the quality.
The Redray player is said to be able to play the Odemax format, the format RED developed for compressing video data from RED cameras. It is also said to play 1,080p and 720p videos in MPEG4 format, which are intended to be upscalable to 4K format.
The 4K player is also equipped with USB 2.0, an SD card slot, a network connection, a WLAN module and infrared for the remote control. Video output takes place via four HDMI outputs, so that according to RED the Redray player can supply images to four Full HD screens or two 4K displays in parallel. Several players are also supposed to be synchronisable via Genlock, making it possible to drive a complete video wall. Audio output is delivered separately via another HDMI output, with support intended for up to 7.1-channel sound at 24 to 48 kHz.
In practice, the player is said to be able to handle ambient temperatures of 0 to 40 degrees. The Redray video player can be pre-ordered for 1,450 dollars and is supposed to be delivered by the end of 2012. However, since we are already all too familiar with RED’s legendary delivery times and delays, this delivery date may still be doubted.
