Tech artist Simon Verstraete shows you in this new Dungeon Generator tutorial series how you can create procedural level designs. WFC (Wave Function Collapse) nodes from SideFX Labs are used to define the basic shapes of the levels. Houdini Digital Assets can then be used to generate different dungeons, for example in Unreal Engine 4. You can find the project file here.

Part 1 – Wave Function Collapse Nodes

A first look at the WFC nodes for creating basic patterns. Wang Tiles can then be used to generate the basic shapes of the levels:

Part 2 – Basic Layout with WFC

In the next step, geometries are assigned so that assets can be assigned to the various points in the level.

Part 3 – Adding Walls and Cliffs

Walls and lava are then created using the WFC level design:

Part 4 – Decorating the Levels

In the final part, you learn to procedurally generate the individual rooms with columns, crates, debris and enemies via a secondary WFC setup.
