Browser-based review joins Unity

Unity acquired SyncSketch, the online review platform founded in 2016 by former Pixar technical director Bernhard Haux. Financial terms were not disclosed. Unity said the service would be integrated more deeply into its ecosystem, but had not detailed the product structure at publication time.

SyncSketch displays still images, video and 3D models in a browser. Teams can annotate files, use a shared whiteboard and see collaborators’ changes in real time. Tablet and smartphone access was supported, alongside native connections to Maya, ShotGrid and Unity.

Digital Production tested SyncSketch for issue 04:2021.

Acquisition context

The deal followed Unity’s November 2021 acquisition of Weta Digital’s tools, technology and engineering team for US$1.625 billion. Product integration can change quickly after an acquisition, so verify the current service before relying on it in production.
