Discreet began shipping Character Studio 4, a character-animation plug-in for 3ds max 4 and 5. Discreet later became part of Autodesk.

Dynamics-based Mixing balanced upper-body motion against lower-body movement to produce more natural results. Constraint-based Mixdowns could combine nonlinear sequences into a single clip while respecting foot inverse kinematics and knee constraints, allowing motion-capture and keyframe data to blend without visible transitions.

Quaternion function curves gave animators finer control over joint rotation for smoother movement. Computer Graphics World had already recognised Character Studio 4 with a 2002 Innovation Award.

The plug-in was listed at €1,100 in Germany through Discreet resellers and complemented the 3ds max modelling, animation and rendering system.
