Avid announced Free DV at Macworld 2003, describing it as a free DV-only edition of its editing software. The download was expected during the first half of 2003 for Mac OS X and Windows XP.
Free DV was intended to introduce a broad audience to Avid’s interface and core video-editing workflow. The planned feature set included two video tracks, four audio tracks, basic trimming and editing, and as many as two real-time video streams.
Users needing more capability could move to paid Avid systems such as Xpress DV or Media Composer.
