Alias introduced MotionBuilder 7 at SIGGRAPH with new and expanded character-animation functions, improved data exchange and numerous workflow optimisations.
Alias highlights MotionBuilder’s fast, intuitive workflow and its ability to animate large models and data-intensive characters in real time. The new features build on the software’s core technology, including its real-time architecture, nonlinear animation layering and Story timeline environment. “MotionBuilder 7 gives animators perhaps the best character-performance tools and motion-editing functionality available,” says Shai Hinitz, senior product manager for Alias MotionBuilder, mental ray and Maya.
MotionBuilder 7 adds rigging features designed primarily to simplify the animation of characters carrying props or fitted with appendages such as wings. These Character Extensions can be attached to an existing rig without destroying the current setup. The character and all attached extensions can then be posed and keyed simultaneously. Visual User Feedback highlights selected body parts while artists work with Character Control Rigs, making the current manipulation mode easier to identify. Colour markings on the control rigs also show which body part has already been keyed. Seven new character-manipulation functions are intended to accelerate workflows and help new users learn the software.
Productivity features include optimised tools for solving, blending, sequencing and retargeting, designed to simplify work with motion-capture data or dense datasets. New Save and Load Character Animation functions allow animation clips to be transferred quickly to other characters and reused. User-interface improvements such as Save Reminder streamline the animation process and reduce downtime.
MotionBuilder’s native Alias FBX format supports data exchange with widely used 3D applications. This integration has been improved in the new version; animated character setups, for example, can now move between Alias Maya and MotionBuilder without loss.
Compared with the standard edition, MotionBuilder Pro also provides Live Device Support for multistream motion-capture devices, data-mapping tools and asset-management integration. The software can be adapted to individual requirements through a real-time animation trigger system, Python scripting and the Alias Open Reality SDK, including automation of repetitive tasks.
Alias MotionBuilder 7 is scheduled to be available for Windows and Mac OS X from August 2005. MotionBuilder Pro 7 costs €3,875 for a node-locked version and €4,325 for a floating licence, excluding VAT. First-time MotionBuilder buyers receive one year of Alias Platinum Membership.
