NVIDIA Packs Visual Computing into 1U

NVIDIA’s Quadro Plex VCS S4 combines four GPUs and a 6 GB framebuffer in a compact 1U rack server.

The new server occupies a single rack unit. Despite its compact dimensions, it is designed as a high-performance system for data-intensive applications including offline rendering, remote graphics and embedded visual computing. Four NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600 GPUs fit inside the 1U chassis. Its 6 GB framebuffer can process large textures with full-screen antialiasing, while Shader Model 4.0 supports effects in OpenGL and DirectX 10 applications. The 3D performance of the Quadro Plex VCS S4 is intended to keep scientific and industrial applications interactive when working with large datasets.

The Quadro Plex range

In addition to the new VCS S4, the Quadro Plex range includes desktop systems that can also be installed in a rack as 3U servers. The Quadro Plex S4 is the first model in the range designed exclusively for rack installation, where it occupies only one rack unit.

The Quadro Plex VCS II is primarily designed to operate large monitor arrays. With four Quadro FX 4500 GPUs and a 512 MB buffer for each GPU, it can drive up to eight dual-link DVI displays.

The Quadro Plex III can also output high-resolution SDI signals. It uses two Quadro FX 5500 GPUs, each with a 1 GB framebuffer, and dual HD-SDI graphics-to-video boards. This supports two dual-link DVI monitors alongside two HD-SDI outputs.

The Quadro Plex IV server is optimised for processing and visualising large datasets. It contains two Quadro FX 5600 GPUs, each with a 1.5 GB framebuffer, providing substantial graphics memory. Up to four synchronised dual-link DVI displays can be connected.

The rack-mounted Quadro Plex S4 is suited to large server environments because it occupies only one rack unit. System monitoring, thermal supervision and automatic fault notifications are intended to support integration into data centres.

All servers are available directly from NVIDIA or through NVIDIA distributors. The new Quadro Plex S4 is scheduled to become available in the fourth quarter of 2007.
