This also makes UP only the second animated film ever to be nominated in the “Best Picture” category (after “Beauty and the Beast”). Alongside the nominations for “Best Picture” and “Best Animated Film”, it has promising chances in three further categories: “Best Original Screenplay”, “Best Original Score” and “Best Sound Editing”.
Even before the Oscar nominations, UP had collected some of the world’s most coveted film awards: Pixar’s filmmakers received two Golden Globes for “Best Animated Film” and “Best Original Score”. The versatile film composer Michael Giacchino was thus honoured for his work on UP for the second time; last Sunday, he received the Grammy for his fantastic score. UP has been available on Disney DVD, Disney Blu-ray and as a download since January 21.
The creatives at Disney Animation Studios also have reason to celebrate. Their 49th animated film, THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG, was likewise nominated in the “Best Animated Film” category. A modern, swinging fairy tale in which a cheeky little frog coaxes a kiss from the pretty girl Tiana in order to transform back, after which the involuntary couple hop together in frog form across 1920s New Orleans, where jazz and blues run in people’s blood. The rousing songs written by Oscar winner Randy Newman so impressed the Academy Award jury that two songs, “Almost There” and “Down in New Orleans”, are competing for the “Best Song” Oscar. THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG will be available on Disney DVD, Disney Blu-ray Disc and as a download from April 15, 2010.
