There are no major surprises or newcomers among the nominated animated films, but solid works by experienced animation veterans. Thus, Pixar’s "Brave", Tim Burton’s "Frankenweenie", "ParaNorman" from Laika Inc., Disney’s "Wreck-It Ralph" and "The Pirates! Band of Misfits", which was created through a collaboration between Aardman Animation and Sony Pictures Animation, are nominated. Naming the favourite in this category—difficult, because all the films were innovative and among the leaders in animation this year.
The Oscar for Best Visual Effects could go to Peter Jackson’s 48fps 3D work "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" or Ang Lee’s 3D adaptation of the bestseller "Life of Pi". "Marvel´s The Avengers" and "Prometheus" are also in the running for Best Effects. The only 2D film in this category is "Snow White and the Huntsman".
One of the big winners of the evening could be Austrian director Michael Haneke’s "Amour" , which is nominated five times, including for Best Picture. The most nominations, namely twelve, went to Steven Spielberg’s "Lincoln".
