For those who don’t know the tool: Corner Pinner is a Fuse for Fusion and the Fusion page in DaVinci Resolve. It targets corner-pin, tracker and clean-plate work inside Blackmagic Design’s compositing ecosystem.
Small tool, familiar pain
Corner Pinner is a new Fuse for DaVinci Resolve Fusion that gives artists more control over corner-pin positioners. It takes inspiration, and some matrix code, from the older BetterCornerPin Fuse, which no longer works in Fusion. That is already enough of a reason for a replacement. Corner pinning is one of those jobs that only looks simple until the plate, tracker and client logo decide to form a small cabal.
v0.13 adds tracker input
Version 0.13 adds Tracker Input support. Corners can be linked or baked to either Source or Destination, which should make tracker-driven inserts less dependent on node spaghetti and quiet bargaining with the gods of Compositing. The update also adds From Frame mode. It flattens the image at the reference frame and is aimed at clean-plate work. That is useful when the shot needs a patch, the patch needs perspective, and nobody wants to rebuild the same setup for the sixth time.
What the Fuse does
Corner Pinner keeps source and destination positions in the same node. It supports bi-linear and perspective mapping, perspective crop, edge sampling, custom clipping, invert, Copy Src to Dst and Copy Dst to Src. It also includes overlays similar to Corner Positioner, plus a grid overlay using the Planar Tracker grid. The grid overlay only shows perspective mapping. Offset sliders cover horizontal, vertical, left, bottom, right and top, because four corner controls were apparently too little.
DCTL speed, normal caveats
The tool is DCTL-driven and fast. The DCTL side runs in Fusion through GPU paths handled by the host, which keeps the heavy pixel work out of the “why is this still calculating” category. Treat the speed claim as a speed claim until it survives a real speedy comp, a real GPU and the traditional production environment, meaning three mismatched monitors, one ancient driver and a howling producer going on and on and oin and on and on and on about “the good old days”.
Fixes and the known bite
Version 0.13 fixes requested DoD and RoI handling, fixes a top and left pixel rendering issue with in-between pixels, and removes duplicated code. Concatenation remains on the to-do list. The known bug is: if DoD exceeds 10,000 or -10,000 and the matrix is set to invert, the DoD can overflow and flip.
Test Corner Pinner v0.13 on copied comps, tracker-driven shots and ugly edge cases before production use, especially where large DoD values and inversion are involved.
