Pixar released RenderMan 11 with ray tracing, global illumination and Deep Shadow technology.

Deep Shadows used an advanced shadow-map format with pre-filtering plus transparency and volumetric information, improving animated shadows and enabling new effects.

The ray-tracing subsystem extended reflections, refractions, colour bleeding and shadows with more precise control and fewer production steps. Existing workflows remained available.

Optimisations accelerated large and deeply complex scenes, including hair, fur and shadow work. Direct rendering of shadows and reflections reduced the required passes. The release belongs to the RenderMan and ray-tracing archives.
