Autodesk Completes Skymatter Acquisition

Autodesk completes its acquisition of Skymatter’s assets and plans closer Mudbox interoperability with Maya and 3ds Max.

Autodesk completed the acquisition of substantially all assets of Skymatter Limited, developer of the Mudbox 3D sculpting software. The transaction followed an agreement announced on 6 August 2007.

Mudbox added a brush-based modelling workflow to Autodesk’s media and entertainment portfolio. The software had been used to create digital creatures for King Kong, The Golden Compass, Fred Claus and Inkheart.

Autodesk planned to develop Mudbox as a standalone product while improving interoperability with Maya and 3ds Max. Skymatter founders Andrew Camenisch, Dave Cardwell and Tibor Madjar joined Autodesk Media & Entertainment.

The company also expected the sculpting technology to serve automotive and industrial-design work alongside film, television and game production.
