Erlangen Comic Salon: Focus on China

Every two years, the comic world meets in Erlangen. In more than 20 years, Germany’s largest and most important comic festival has contributed substantially to comics becoming accepted not only as a mass medium but also as an art form — one that, like hardly any other, mirrors society and measures social change — and becoming fit for the ‘salon’. The hallmark of the Erlangen Salon is that it brings art and commerce, mainstream and avant-garde together in an event representing every variety of the ‘Ninth Art’. Kabel Digital Home live at the anniversary ceremony

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has now announced its nominations for the 80th Academy Awards. The western thriller “No Country for Old Men” enters this year’s Oscar race as the favourite. Joel and Ethan Coen’s work received eight nominations when they were announced. Close behind are the British film “Atonement” with seven nominations and the oil-prospecting drama “There Will Be Blood” with six.

18th Lünen Film Festival Concludes With More Visitors

The Lünen Film Festival celebrated its coming of age with an all-round successful festival. Around 7.700 visitors, more than ever before, found their way into the cinemas over the four days of the festival. Particularly popular were the films “The Three Robbers”, “Jacob's Brother” and “We Say You! Darling”, some of which sold out in several screenings, the latter alone meeting nearly 800 enthusiastic spectators at the opening gala.

Good start for the first digital creation days with many photos

The first digital creation days, which took place from November 8 to 9, focused on computer-generated images for film, Internet, advertising, computer games, industry and architecture. 1,400 professional visitors from all over Germany met at the networking event at the Karlsruhe Convention Center to learn about and exchange views on trends in computer graphics and animation. In around 50 workshops and presentations, industry experts primarily examined developments in the German-speaking region. The most important prize for computer graphics and animation, the animago AWARD, was presented for the first time as part of a ceremonial evening event on the occasion of the digital creation days.

Two German websites were honored this week in Venice with the “World Summit Award” (WSA). Both the German Bundestag website (e-Government category) and the Hessischer Rundfunk topic website about the Frankfurt Auschwitz trials “End of Silence” (e-Culture category) are thus among the best websites in the world.

9th International Eyes & Ears Awards

Around 700 guests celebrated the 32 prize winners and 96 finalists of the International Eyes & Ears Awards last Thursday. For the ninth time, industry association Eyes & Ears of Europe presented the distinction as part of Medientage München. The two special prizes "Innovation" and "Effectiveness" went to 20th Century Fox and ProSieben respectively. Robert Wilson received the Eyes & Excellence Award.

XXS – Dortmund Short Film Festival

The Dortmund Short Film Festival is organised by students of the Advertising and Media Academy Marquardt (WAM) in cooperation with the Dortmund Agency and CineStar Dortmund. A selection of 10 short films will be screened from all submissions from German-speaking countries. An expert jury will select the three best short films and award them the "Dortmund Short Film Prize" in bronze, silver and gold, which are endowed with 500, 1,000 and 1,500 euros respectively. The Audience Award will also be presented again this year.

The most important competition for Digital Content Creation (DCC) in the German-speaking region is launching with a new concept. This year, the main prize for “Best Production” will be awarded for the first time, and the winner of the “Best University Production” category will be rewarded with a sponsorship prize. The submission deadline is June 30, 2007. The animago EVENT 2007 with a festive awards ceremony takes place as part of the digital creation days – the networking event of the German-speaking DCC industry – at the Congress Center in Karlsruhe. On November 8 and 9,2007, the digital creation days offer, as part of an integrated congress and exhibition concept, the opportunity to get to know new trends and developments in the German-speaking DCC industry. The animago Awards will be officially presented on the evening of November 8 as part of an exciting Award Ceremony.

Two successes at “kurzundschön” for students

Two awards from the renowned “kurzundschön” film competition went this year to design students at Georg Simon Ohm University of Applied Sciences – Nuremberg University of Applied Sciences. They study “Film and Animation” under Prof. Jürgen Schopper and accepted the coveted awards at a gala in Cologne. The Europe-wide “kurzundschön” competition for young talent took place for the 10th time and attracted entrants in various competition categories with cash and material prizes worth 21,000 euros.

NDR films sweep the North German Film Award

"The Art of Negative Thinking" by Bråd Breien was honored with the NDR Film Award at the 49th Nordic Film Days in Lübeck. The festival’s highest award, worth 12,500 euros, was presented by the NDR Director of Television, Volker Herres, on Saturday evening (November 3) at the film award night in Lübeck’s Music and Congress Hall.
